Medical Society and Collaboration

January 17th, 2009

Here thes tory quote from Mlive.com. It’s abotu Michigan State Medical Society collaborates with Microsoft to connect medical and pharmacy data statewide. Below the complete story.

Michigan is slated to become the first in the nation to provide statewide connection of medical and pharmacy data, thanks to a collaboration announced today between the Michigan State Medical Society and Microsoft Corp., Compuware subsidiary Covisint and MedImpact Healthcare Systems.

The medical society’s electronic portal, MSMS Connect, will allow patients and physicians to access critical health care data in one location, the Microsoft HealthVault.

According to the medical society, about 3.5 million Michigan patients receive their pharmacy benefits through MedImpact, a pharmacy benefit management compnay. Those patients will be able to easily view their prescription information at HealthVault through MSMS Connect. With patient permission, physicians will also have access to this information, enabled through Covisint’s technologies.

“This puts the patient’s medication history at the fingertips of the physician through a simple, secure internet connection into MSMS Connect without the need for electronic prescribing software or an electronic medical record,” said Dr. Gregory J. Forzley, chair of the MSMS board of directors, in a press release announcing the collaboration.

When fully implemented, HealthVault will allow patients to store their whole family’s entire health record in one location at no cost. Patients will have complete control over their electronic health data, but can give permission to physicians and other health care providers to view it.

The fully operational system will also allow for uploads from medical monitoring devices used by patients to track physical conditions including heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar.
